More than 900 supporters take on Walking With The Wounded's biggest-ever Cumbrian Challenge

By Media Team on

More than 900 supporters gathered in Grasmere this weekend to take part in Walking With The Wounded’s Cumbrian Challenge, making this year's event the biggest in the charity's history.

Now in its 12th year, the Cumbrian Challenge has become a flagship event in the Armed Forces charity calendar, bringing together supporters from across the UK to raise money for veterans and their families while taking on the Cumbrian Fells.

This year Walking With The Wounded celebrates its 15th year anniversary. Since being founded in 2010, the charity has supported more than 15,000 veterans and family members through employment support, wraparound care coordination, and mental health programmes.

Participants in this year’s challenge have already raised more than £250,000.

Teams tackled one of three routes — Peak, Tough, or Tougher — ranging from 12km to 27km across the Cumbrian Fells. Despite challenging weather conditions at times, all participants crossed the finish line.

The winning teams completed the routes in:

Peak: 2 hours 50 minutes

Tough: 4 hours 36 minutes

Tougher: 4 hours 23 minutes

The fastest teams in each category were Stroll Patrol (Peak), The Mobile Dog Groomers (Tough) and Will Run For Cold Ones (Tougher).

Tony Hulton, CEO of Walking With The Wounded, said, “Thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s Cumbrian Challenge, as well as our corporate partners and the WWTW team who helped make it happen. It was a privilege to see so many supporters take on the Cumbrian Fells in support of the charity and raise money to support those who served.

“The Cumbrian Challenge is our flagship fundraising event, and it is fantastic to see such strong support for the Armed Forces community, particularly as the charity marks its 15th anniversary this year.”

WWTW Events Manager Martin Lynn, added, “The Cumbrian Challenge is always a standout moment in the charity’s events calendar, and every year I’m amazed by the number of people who dedicate their time to taking part in support of Walking With The Wounded.

“This year’s routes were challenging and the weather conditions tested everyone at times, but seeing participants cross the finish line smiling made it all worthwhile. Bring on Cumbrian Challenge 2027.”

Since launching in 2013, the Cumbrian Challenge has welcomed more than 1,600 participants and raised over £2.5 million to support veterans and their families across the UK.

Alternative Ways to Donate

By Fundraising Team on

Whilst fundraising is one of the most popular ways of donating to charity as it often gives people the opportunity to take on a new challenge, there are also a range of other ways you can donate. No matter how often or how much you want to donate, there’s a method for everyone.

1. Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving is one of the easiest, and most cost-effective ways of donating to a cause close to your heart. With Payroll Giving, your donation is taken directly from your wage before tax, so once set up, doesn’t require you to do anything else! It’s quick and easy to set up, and one of the biggest advantages to Payroll Giving is that it comes to us as a charity inclusive of the income tax you would have paid, without any additional cost to...

10 Ways To Increase Your Fundraising

By Fundraising Team on

We know that fundraising can sometimes be tricky, and it can be difficult to know where to start, so we want to highlight 10 ways to boost your donation efforts for Cumbrian Challenge.

1. Gift Aid

Don’t forget to encourage everyone to claim Gift Aid on their donations, and if you’re eligible, make sure to claim it for your contributions as well. At no extra cost to anyone, this allows an additional 25p to be added to every pound donated. Every one of those pennies goes directly toward assisting veterans and their families who need our support to rebuild their lives.

2. Matched Funding

An increasing number of organisations are willing to match the funds you raise. The best part is that it won’t cost you or your supporters anything extra....
